A strong, pungent odour stirred me from the slumber. Above me stood the druid teacher, she didn’t look happy at all.

“You are a magnet for troubles,” she said in a stern voice, grinding something in a mortar.

I raised my head and winced as the pain exploded in my entire body. I slumped back.

“Yeah, you were hit by powerful spells and there isn’t cheating their effects. Whatever you did, it delayed it.”

I groaned, reaping the consequences of my mysterious strength. In truth, without it, I’d be dead by now. The question is why?

“Any idea who this man was and why was he after me?”

The druid teacher stopped the grinding and squinted at me.

“Some assassin. He wasn’t connected to the first attackers, which means there are others who want you dead.”

“But why?”

She laughed, it sounded dry and tired.

“Didn’t you mention Valiant? The Radiant One. The heir of the realm. Do you think the women of the court will stand aside and watch as you snatch the best snack for yourself?”

“What the hell?” I said a bit too strongly, which earned me more pain. “Ouch… why would anyone think I want to take Valiant for myself. I have Jaye.” Do I?

“And you don’t want Valiant for yourself?” she asked.

I had an answer ready at the back of my tongue, I just couldn’t say it. I opened my mouth several times but nothing came out.

“You see, you can’t deny it.”

“Did I kill him?” I asked, hoping to change the subject.

She shook her head.

“No, but he isn’t in the best shape. But… you did cause a problem.” I didn’t like the look of the pain on her face.

“What problem? With the assassin?”

“Nah, the assassin is already gone, in trusted hands. But there was a student who saw you.”

Suddenly, a cold shudder cut through my body. I understood what she meant…

“Isn’t there something to make him or her forget?”

“No. Druids are resistant to negative elixirs.”

“What… does it mean?”

“I don’t know yet.”
